Both the papers will have objective questions, and you will get two hours for each paper. The Union Public Service Commission will draft a list of students on the basis of qualifying marks obtained in the General Studies Paper I and minimum 33% marks in the General Studies Paper II. Marks from the General Studies Paper I will be counted for the merit list finalized by the commission.

UPSC Exam Pattern is not very complicated. Syllabus for Paper I entail; Current Affairs of National and International News, History of India and India National Movement, Geography (Physical, Social and Economical geography India and World), Indian Polity and Governance (Political System, Constitution, Panchayati Raj), Economic and Social Development, Sustainable Development, Demographics, Poverty, Policies, Climate Change, Biodiversity and General Science. Civil Services Mains Examinations

Of the nine papers, seven will be considered for the merit list whereas, for the rest two, students need to secure the minimum marks prescribed by UPSC every year. It is necessary that the student thoroughly studies the UPSC Exam Pattern in order to crack the difficult paper.

Paper, I of the mains exam, features essay questions on multiple topics and total marks of 250. You need to study the syllabus in depth for the essay questions. Marks are given on the precision and content of the essay. It is advised to stick close to the topic and avoid any diversions.

Paper II (General Studies I) of mains examination will test your knowledge of General Studies from the areas; History and Geography of world, Indian Heritage and culture.

Students hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya, have the option of not giving this paper. Paper IX will test your English skills.

Interview

There is no simple structure you can follow for the Interview round. A grooming session is advised by many counselors for students who crack mains examinations. This round is the toughest to crack and tests the candidate of different scales ranging from communication skills and general awareness to logical thinking and alertness. Every candidate will face a board of senior members from the commission who will access you on your portfolio of work and educational experience and confidence level. Instead of a rigid questioning round, a detailed and thorough conversational approach is opted by the interviewers. This helps them analyze the candidates on critical attributes that are deemed necessary for Civil Services. Candidates should be well aware of National and International news including Economy, Political Developments, Scientific Developments, and History. They will be assessed on their interests and likes in national and international affairs as well. The interviewee should express his/her own opinion over the facts and maintain a balanced judgment. Leadership qualities, social skills, intellectual abilities, and ethical thinking are some of the categories they will be judged on. This round will carry 275 marks.
