Today, we will discuss Medical Residency (MD or MS) in Nepal with a holistic approach. If you are lacking any information regarding any principal aspect of this topic, we have got you covered!
After completing the MBBS degree and a one-year compulsory clinical internship, thousands of thriving medical practitioners apply for a Post-graduate study program in India each year. Though, very few aspirants become successful in qualifying for the study MD or MS. Besides, the rules and the scenarios of the Post Graduate Medical Admission have changed to a great extent. Now, all the admissions are allotted only through entrance exams, so they choose the study abroad pathways.
Nepal is a favorable place to study MD or MS courses as some institutions in Nepal are approved by the Medical Council of India and offer MCI recognized MD or MS seats. The candidates can check the notifications at the official website of MCI. Upon graduation, a candidate must review the Nepalese institutions for Higher Medical education.
Before heading diving deeper into this matter, let us first crisply review what refers to a Medical Residency. Let us begin!
A Medical Residency or post-graduate training is a phase of training undertaken after completing studies at the graduate medical school. It denotes a qualified physician holding the post-graduate degree of MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery) who practices Medicine. The Medical Residency is usually performed in a hospital or a clinic, under the direct or indirect guidance of a senior clinician or doctor, who is registered in that specialty (for example, an attending physician or a consultant). Such training provides extensive knowledge with practical training in a specialized medical field.
The first year of the Medical residency is called an Internship. The internship involves rotating to other areas within one specialty or rotating across different specialties. Such rotation facilitates the MD or MS professionals to perceive the role in which they want to become specialized or gain specialization for the rest of their residency period and ultimately for a fruitful career ahead.
Notably, you will be obliged to perform specific tasks during your medical residency. The major routine tasks of a medical resident are mentioned as follows:
a) Performing the initial diagnosis and ongoing assessments of the patient's medical conditions.
b) Reviewing patient histories and performing physical examinations.
c) Planning assessment and treatment schedule.
d) Performing rounds for medical follow-up.
e) Noting records of admission, progress records, procedure notes, and discharge notes.
f) Prescribing diagnostic tests, medications, & check-ups.
g) Having interactions with the family of the patients.
Post-graduate Medical Residency Programs offer post-graduate medical degrees of MD or MS. Let us review both of these programs.
In general, the award of Post-graduate Medical Education Program shall include the degree of MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery) in the prescribed branches of Basic, Para-clinical, and Clinical subjects belonging to modern medicine. The two most popular medical post-graduate programs which students can ideally pursue after their medical graduation are Doctor of Medicine or MD Exam & Master of Surgery or MS Exam. Including the exam period, these programs have a duration of a minimum of three years.
The degree awarded by different Universities and Institutions across the country will be the same.

Along with these, he must be having the capabilities to mobilize the team whenever required. He should be a health advocate, socially & ethically a responsible person. He must work for the well-being of his patients and society as a whole.
So, on summing up, the objectives of the Post-graduate Medical Education Program is to equip the medical candidate with the following abilities:
A. Requisite Clinical Excellence
B. Leadership Potential
C. Communicative Ability
D. Researching Abilities
E. Collaborative Skills
F. Teaching Competence
G. Health Advocacy Expertise
Let us also review the MD and MS degree programs individually.
The Doctor of Medicine or MD Programme is a Post-graduate medical program that you can pursue after completing your MBBS degree. According to the National Medical Commission (NMC) in India, this course has a total program duration of three years. The course is available in several specializations. Notably, MD is the highest degree for medical practitioners. As per the norms of a country, the MD degree can be either a professional doctorate (as in the case of the US or Canada) or a research degree (as in Germany or the UK).
The Master of Surgery or MS Program is a post-graduate program pursued by medical graduates to become specialists. The minimum academic qualification for admission in the MS course is the MBBS degree. The Master of Surgery program is specially designed for those medical aspirants interested in the field of surgery and want to get the knowledge & surgical training to gain expertise in this domain.
Here, we must say that it is not a compulsion for an individual to do MD or MS after MBBS. It wholly depends on the personal interest of an individual. However, the sole degree of MBBS may not land you to a highly lucrative career that a specialized post-graduate degree would do. As we all know, in today's modern era, there is a high level of competition in the practical world. Nowadays, people prefer specialists over general practitioners. Therefore, to have a competitive edge over others or to stand out from the crowd, you just need to have some kind of specialization. With specialization and your hard work to gain expertise, you will be able to mark yourself as unique from others. So, to gain specialization in a particular area, we will suggest that you should pursue medical post-graduation, i.e. MD or MS as per your choice & interests.
At this point, some individuals might also be thinking that what is the difference between MD & MS, which of these is better for your career. Basically, it all depends upon your interest and skills. If you are one of those persons, who have not yet decided whether to go for MD or MS, we will help you make an informed decision.
Here, we have marked out a few vital differences between MD and MS and our opinion on both, which will help you decide better. You should go through it once.
1) Doctor of Medicine or MD program is suitable for students who want to become a physician; whereas, the Master of Surgery or MS program is for the students who aspire to become a surgeon.
2) The MS is a Surgical program that provides you with knowledge & training in the field of surgery. While the MD program is a Non-surgical program; however, some branches are there where surgery can be a part of the MD study.
3) Being a medical practitioner with the qualifications of Doctor of Medicine (MD) usually won't require you any tools and equipment to treat your patients. On the other hand, being a medical practitioner working MS professional will require you to use tools and equipment to treat your patients.
In our opinion, the career prospects of both MD and MS study programs are comparable and excellent in their specific domains. But, it is observed that in terms of financial gains, surgical specialties are more lucrative. However, an individual should also keep in mind that the incubation period in the surgical fields is relatively longer than in the non-surgical fields. Most importantly, not anyone should opt for the field of surgery for their career as it is a science with a fusion of art. Surgery is a creative domain in medical science that demands a lot of skills, caliber, and passion to gain expertise. Also, keep in mind that if you will pursue MS after MBBS, you will have to work a great deal with blood and human tissue. So in case, individuals are not able to dispose of themselves to incisions and a lot of blood, they should avoid opting for MS; instead, MD will be ideal for them.
So, up to now, you must have made your mind concerning whether to pursue MD or MS for your professional career. Here, we have curated separate lists of specializations available in both MD and MS courses:

Let us consider the exemplary case of the Patan Hospital of Nepal, which is a tertiary medical learning institution. At the same time, there is a need to develop professional training programs in internal medicine sub-specializations. The respective authorities are putting efforts to satisfy these needs. Also, Nepal will upgrade to even more superior quality medical education & infrastructure in the coming years.
As far it is concerned with the quality of medical education, Nepal has shown appreciable progress in maintaining the quality of medical education. Notably, it emphasizes Proficient Learning, Computer Assisted Learning, Skill Development, and Laboratory and Research-Based Learning to harmonize with the prevalent Regional, National, and International trends in Medical Education and to fulfill the expectation of people of the society.
The Regulations which are implemented to achieve the desired level of satisfaction which is expected from modern Medical Practitioners and will equip the professional with marketable skills that will make them flourish only within their regional territory, but at the Nation or even at the Global level.
