The government of Nepal has still not cleared the rules and regulations for MBBS admissions for this academic year, many of the medical colleges of Nepal have still not updated the fee structure for this academic year. Due to the delay in the declaration of the 12th results because of the Covid19 pandemic, the government has not issued the guidelines for admission. As per the latest information received, the students who are NEET qualified can get admission based on the NEET scorecard, but the students who are NEET not qualified will have to appear for the undergraduate common entrance exam. For some of the top universities of Nepal, the student must appear and qualify for the undergraduate common entrance exam conducted. As per the notification by the Nepal government, the fees will not be increased for the Nepali students but they will be increased for the foreign students. This year the Nepal government has also decreased the quota for foreign students.

Nepal, a country of beautiful valleys and mountains as one may know, is also a very suitable country for a student to pursue the MBBS course. The country with fabulous landscapes and breath-taking views does not only limit to its very famous tourism industry.  Tourism has flourished very well in this beautiful nation but its education has not been left behind. MBBS course which is very popular among the students from science faculty is offered by the education system of Nepal for local as well as abroad students. If Indian students are looking for pursuing MBBS from an abroad nation then there is no need for them to search far and wide and cross the horizons to receive the best education. The dream can be fulfilled within the continent and by crossing just a short distance. The answer for today’s search lies in their very neighboring country, Nepal.

Students looking to pursue MBBS from abroad Nations will definitely look for universities that are well recognized by international bodies such as WHO, MIC, UNESCO etc. This is to ensure that the quality of education provided by these Universities is up to the mark and will not let you down when students apply for jobs. The education system of Nepal ensures that there is a proper balance of practical as well as theoretical skills in a student and the syllabus is designed accordingly for students of MBBS. The course is a real test of practical skills and during the time of learning a student needs to be very attentive towards their practical skills as it is very important in the long run while practicing in professional life. Hence, Nepal provides a 5.5 -year course of MBBS with one year of the internship included which would give good hands-on education and practical skills to its students and which will be helpful in the longer run.

MBBS from Nepal is very cheap as compared to other Western Nations.  The cost is very affordable by most of the middle-class families of India who dream of getting their children to pursue education from abroad Nations. The best part about pursuing MBBS from universities of Nepal is that most of the universities allow payment of fees in installments making it easier for the families to pay fees. The installment system for payment of fees is very helpful as it gives time for the families to pay partly by raising money. It does not create financial issues in the student’s family and the students do not have to worry about the financial stress that is usually created in the family if any of the family members is pursuing education from abroad nation and especially if the course is an expensive one like MBBS.

Universities of Nepal provide one of the best qualities of education to its students at very reasonable prices. The approximate fees of one year of MBBS course is between 8 to 10 lakh rupees which are far lower than other Western Nations. These rates are very convenient as compared to not only the abroad Nations but also the private medical colleges of India.

The Indian students can complete their MBBS course from the Universities of Nepal without much pressure of documentation and other legal procedures. This is because Visa is not required for Indian students to study in Nepal. While going for education in an abroad nation, the processing of documents and getting a visa for education becomes one of the major problems for the students. It is a lengthy process and students usually get under stress during this process of official work. But on the other hand, students willing to pursue MBBS from Nepal don’t get stressed at all as the process is easier as compared to all other abroad nations and the best thing is that no Visa is required by the students to study MBBS in Nepal.

The exams such as TOFEL and IELTS are compulsory for foreign students to pursue MBBS from America, Europe, and other western countries. This becomes a bit of an issue for Indian students who are having Basic English with not much high English proficiency. However, for students willing to persuade MBBS from Nepal, any English proficiency exam is not required. This is very good as students don’t need to prepare for extra exams and this can save extra effort and time.

In a nutshell, Nepal can be a dream come true abroad education destination for Indian students if they get an opportunity to pursue MBBS from Nepal.

It is an entrance test that you must go through for getting admission to various institutions in Nepal. In case you don't know much about this exam, you have landed right! Here, we will provide you comprehensive information regarding the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination in Nepal.

So, let's begin with it.

An Introduction

Previously, after the establishment of the Institute of Medicine under Tribhuvan University in 1972, Health Professional education was started in Nepal that initiated training of middle-level human resources for health. In 1987, Bachelor level courses were started in the Institute of Medicine while, postgraduate studies began in 1982. Further, in 1993, B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences was instituted in eastern Nepal. Also, the Manipal Academy of Health Sciences was founded under Kathmandu University as an affiliated private institution in the same year. Later, in 2001, the Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences as inherent campus started the MBBS program in 2001. Then, the Patan Academy of Health Sciences was established in 2008.

So, over a period of a decade since the late 90s' many private medical institutions were also instituted in affiliation to various universities. The expeditious development of medical institutions helped for filling the gap between the demand & supply of human resources for health. However, there have been issues considering the quality of health professional education and in the process and costs related to the entrance examination and enrollment of candidates. Based on this, the National Medical Education Act 2075 has conceived the Common entrance examination. It is organized by Medical Education Commission for enrollment of students in various programs and colleges throughout Nepal. For conducting the Undergraduate common entrance examination, The commission felt the need to prepare a common syllabus for organizing the Undergraduate common entrance examination. It was done in consultation with experts holding experience in undergraduate entrance examinations from various institutions.

Executing UGCEE: The Procedure

1. The universities or colleges conducting undergraduate entrance exams were formally intimated to send the syllabus for existing entrance examinations conducted by them.

2. Further, the syllabus from various institutions were gathered for the related domains.

3. Then, An official team of experts in the concerned domains from various institutions collaborated & with the help of available compiled documents, they developed the common syllabus.

4. Including the experts who worked up for the syllabus, the experienced personnel carrying out the undergraduate entrance examinations in various institutions, and the Heads of examination departments in those specific institutions, a workshop was organized. This was done to review the contents & other aspects of the syllabus.

5. A workshop was organized with all the heads of institutions and the respective authority for regulation to come up with the general agreement.

General agreement/consensus:

As per the aforesaid process, a common agreement applicable on the issues related to the syllabus were developed with idea generations and regular discussions. It had the involvement of all stakeholders concerning the training of undergraduate course programs.

The experts consented to develop the syllabus for four groups constituting all the undergraduate programs in Nepal:

1. MBBS/BDS/BSc Nursing/BASLP/ B Perfusion Technology

2. BAMS/BSc MLT/BSc MIT/BPT/BPharm/B Optometry

3. BNS (Bachelor in Nursing Science)

4. BPH (Bachelor in Public Health)

A consent was approved that the entrance exam paper will consist of 200 multiple choice questions to enhance the content included and to coordinate with the recent practice as well. By reducing the chances of a tie in the marks among the candidates, will also aid in the individualization of candidates.

There will be a Single Best Response Type (Type A) of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with four options.

Adopt Criterion-Referenced Test with passing marks of 50% and no negative marking scheme.

A consent was generated to allow a total of three hours with an instruction to paper setter that the stem or headpieces of the MCQs should not cross sixty words.

Everybody approved to include 20 MCQs from the Mental Agility Test for all the U.G. course programs.

A consent was formed to include 20 MCQs related to the specific subject according to the concerned PCL programs, for the programs with eligibility from PCL on Health Sciences was also to be met.

The level of difficulty for the items should be set from the time of item preparation as follows:

1. Recall:- 30%

2. Understanding:- 50%

3. Application and above:- 20%

Now, let's take a look at the eligibility guidelines and exam format set for the four groups representing all the undergraduate programs in Nepal.
