Nepal, a country of beautiful valleys and mountains as one may know, is also a very suitable country for a student to pursue the MBBS course. The country with fabulous landscapes and breath-taking views does not only limit to its very famous tourism industry.  Tourism has flourished very well in this beautiful nation but its education has not been left behind. MBBS course which is very popular among the students from science faculty is offered by the education system of Nepal for local as well as abroad students. If Indian students are looking for pursuing MBBS from an abroad nation then there is no need for them to search far and wide and cross the horizons to receive the best education. The dream can be fulfilled within the continent and by crossing just a short distance. The answer for today’s search lies in their very neighboring country, Nepal.

Nepal is currently one of the most famous destinations for Indian students to pursue MBBS. There is a high level of competition for students to secure seats in the MBBS course among the top universities of Nepal. A student need not limit thoughts about Nepal to the beautiful sceneries but should also explore the wonderful education provided by the nation in MBBS. While thinking about Nepal as a destination for the MBBS course various questions can arise in the mind of a student. Below given are a few frequent questions that might arise in a student’s mind before going to study MBBS in Nepal:-

Students looking to pursue MBBS from abroad Nations will definitely look for universities that are well recognized by international bodies such as WHO, MIC, UNESCO etc. This is to ensure that the quality of education provided by these Universities is up to the mark and will not let you down when students apply for jobs. The education system of Nepal ensures that there is a proper balance of practical as well as theoretical skills in a student and the syllabus is designed accordingly for students of MBBS. The course is a real test of practical skills and during the time of learning a student needs to be very attentive towards their practical skills as it is very important in the long run while practicing in professional life. Hence, Nepal provides a 5.5 -year course of MBBS with one year of the internship included which would give good hands-on education and practical skills to its students and which will be helpful in the longer run.

MBBS from Nepal is very cheap as compared to other Western Nations.  The cost is very affordable by most of the middle-class families of India who dream of getting their children to pursue education from abroad Nations. The best part about pursuing MBBS from universities of Nepal is that most of the universities allow payment of fees in installments making it easier for the families to pay fees. The installment system for payment of fees is very helpful as it gives time for the families to pay partly by raising money. It does not create financial issues in the student’s family and the students do not have to worry about the financial stress that is usually created in the family if any of the family members is pursuing education from abroad nation and especially if the course is an expensive one like MBBS.

Universities of Nepal provide one of the best qualities of education to its students at very reasonable prices. The approximate fees of one year of MBBS course is between 8 to 10 lakh rupees which are far lower than other Western Nations. These rates are very convenient as compared to not only the abroad Nations but also the private medical colleges of India.

The Indian students can complete their MBBS course from the Universities of Nepal without much pressure of documentation and other legal procedures. This is because Visa is not required for Indian students to study in Nepal. While going for education in an abroad nation, the processing of documents and getting a visa for education becomes one of the major problems for the students. It is a lengthy process and students usually get under stress during this process of official work. But on the other hand, students willing to pursue MBBS from Nepal don’t get stressed at all as the process is easier as compared to all other abroad nations and the best thing is that no Visa is required by the students to study MBBS in Nepal.

The exams such as TOFEL and IELTS are compulsory for foreign students to pursue MBBS from America, Europe, and other western countries. This becomes a bit of an issue for Indian students who are having Basic English with not much high English proficiency. However, for students willing to persuade MBBS from Nepal, any English proficiency exam is not required. This is very good as students don’t need to prepare for extra exams and this can save extra effort and time.

In a nutshell, Nepal can be a dream come true abroad education destination for Indian students if they get an opportunity to pursue MBBS from Nepal.

In 1987, Bachelor level courses were started in the Institute of Medicine while, postgraduate studies began in 1982. Further, in 1993, B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences was instituted in eastern Nepal. Also, the Manipal Academy of Health Sciences was founded under Kathmandu University as an affiliated private institution in the same year. Later, in 2001, the Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences as inherent campus started the MBBS program in 2001. Then, the Patan Academy of Health Sciences was established in 2008.

So, over a period of a decade since the late 90s' many private medical institutions were also instituted in affiliation to various universities. The expeditious development of medical institutions helped for filling the gap between the demand & supply of human resources for health. However, there have been issues considering the quality of health professional education and in the process and costs related to the entrance examination and enrollment of candidates. Based on this, the National Medical Education Act 2075 has conceived the Common entrance examination. It is organized by Medical Education Commission for enrollment of students in various programs and colleges throughout Nepal. For conducting the Undergraduate common entrance examination, The commission felt the need to prepare a common syllabus for organizing the Undergraduate common entrance examination. It was done in consultation with experts holding experience in undergraduate entrance examinations from various institutions.

This was done to review the contents & other aspects of the syllabus.

By reducing the chances of a tie in the marks among the candidates, will also aid in the individualization of candidates.

There will be a Single Best Response Type (Type A) of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with four options.

Adopt Criterion-Referenced Test with passing marks of 50% and no negative marking scheme.

A consent was generated to allow a total of three hours with an instruction to paper setter that the stem or headpieces of the MCQs should not cross sixty words.

Everybody approved to include 20 MCQs from the Mental Agility Test for all the U.G. course programs.

As per the medical regulation authorities, the Internship Training of 12 months done abroad is admissible for granting the Permanent Registration under section 13(3) of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 after passing the FMGE for practicing in the country. This means the Indian Nationals who have obtained their Primary Medical Qualification from countries including China, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc., and completed the Internship Training of twelve months in the Foreign Institute during his/her MBBS study abroad are not required to do the twelve-months Internship training in India once again. Also, all the State Medical Councils of India have been advised to follow the same advisory while processing the application of Foreign Medical graduates who are seeking State Medical Registrations.

So, an Internship done in Nepal is fully valid in India and you need not do the one-year internship in India as well for getting your registration here.

 6. What if you fail in the FMGE (MCI Screening Test) /NEXT after doing MBBS from Nepal?

A lot of candidates fail in the FMGE Exam/ MCI screening every year. FMGE exam is very tough to crack. Students wait for the FMGE results with anxiety. Qualifying the MCI screening test is a compulsory requirement for practicing as a doctor/physician in India. The candidates should precisely go through the eligibility standards, admission requisites, and FMGE syllabus before appearing for FMGE. Some candidates waste many productive years of their career in preparation for FMGE Screening. The career prospects of such aspirants are not secure if they fail in FMGE, as failed FMGE candidates do not have many options in front of them. Also, it is observed that foreign medical graduates after facing failures start looking for alternative careers for themselves because there are no jobs for non-MCI doctors.

However, you don’t need to worry much if you are a foreign medical graduate and unable to clear the FMGE exam. You can still make a great career by becoming a lecturer/professor and utilize your education to serve society.

Another best option for FMGE candidates is to pursue a one or two-year PG course in the UK. You will study in UK standards by developing your skills and knowledge in the world’s top universities and research centers. So, FMGE candidates who have failed the MCI test can study further in clinical specialization s like Diabetes, Orthopedics, etc., and non-clinical specializations like Master of Public Health MPH, Pharmacology, etc.

 7. What if you are NEET Not qualified and still go to Nepal for doing MBBS?

The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), earlier known as the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT), is the qualifying exam for the MBBS and BDS programs in Indian medical and dental colleges.  If in case, a candidate fails to qualify the NEET, his/her decision to commence his Foreign medical course program thereafter shall be at his/her own risk, as he/she shall not be allowed to appear for the MCI Screening Test or FMGE exam and thereby would not be allowed for the grant of Provisional/Permanent Registration by the State Medical Councils.

The MCI has made it compulsory to qualify NEET to obtain an eligibility certificate to pursue the MBBS course in foreign medical colleges. Every year, a large number of students apply for MBBS courses in Nepal, China, and other countries. If you are seeking admission in medical schools of Nepal for doing MBBS then you have to pass the NEET Exam. However, for gaining admission you just need to crack the NEET, no matter what's your score!  Therefore, the MBBS study from Nepal is highly favored by individuals who have qualified with a low score. Some medical colleges in Nepal offer direct entry to a candidate with a valid NEET cardholder.

If a candidate wants to do Internal Medicine he would be doing that after passing USLME, unlike the Indian PG in which to get Internal Medicine, he need to rank 800 max, if the rank goes down, he might have to do something which he doesn't like.

2) Superior Quality Education: US Medical Education is known across the planet for the benchmark education. The USA Medical framework has a huge contribution to the industry standards. Here, you will get training in the best healthcare systems.

3) Finest Research Opportunities & Exposure: During the study in the US, you will gain exposure to a variety of things and opportunities for research. Almost every hospital and university in the US have research opportunities available.

Cons:

1) Time-consuming process of USMLE: The USLME consists of three steps along with the need for US clinical experience. If you start after medical school, it takes almost two years of effort.

2) Expensive process: In taking USMLE, money plays a major role. Every step along with Qbanks, travel, and stay in the USA is expensive as the cost of living is significantly higher compared to other countries of the world.

14. the UNITED KINGDOM, PROFESSIONAL AND LINGUISTIC ASSESSMENT (PLAB)

If you want to pursue your Medical PG abroad, then UK is also a good option like the USA due to quality education, expert faculty, and state-of-the-art infrastructure & procedures. Though doing PG in the UK requires PLAB, but some alternate pathways are also there for getting into UK medical system, such as:

  • MRCP pathway.

  • Medical Training Initiative (MTI).

  • Direct University Admission.

The PLAB route to study & work in the UK is the most popular route to the UK, because of its straightforward nature. PLAB is a two-stage exam and it is the basic requirement for International Medical Graduates to practice as a doctor in the UK. Qualifying PLAB will allow you to practice in one of the best countries across the globe. And if you want to become an established medical practitioner in the UK, then after clearing PLAB, you should take MRCP. You can build your career as a specialist after clearing MRCP.

Pros & Cons of doing medical PG from the UK:

Pros:

  • Top-class education: The education is high-grade with superior infrastructure & technology. Further, Indian students studying medicine in selected colleges of the UK are allowed to practice freely without any exams.

  • Field of choice: Similar to USLME, in PLAB also you can get the field of your choice. You don't have to compromise with the area of your interest because of your rank. Also, a candidate has four attempts for it.

  • Job prospects: It takes a maximum of one year to get a job in the UK, which is almost impossible in the case of NEET PG in India.

Cons:

  • High-score required: If you are from India, you need a high score in your board exams (around 95%) to get admission into a competent PG course.

  • IELTS/TOEFL mandatory: You will be required to write IELTS or TOEFL depending upon the university.

15. CANADA MCQEE (MEDICAL COUNCIL OF CANADA EVALUATING EXAMINATION)

After MBBS, many students aspire to study in Canada for their postgraduation. Canada is a favored choice for most of the students due to high-grade education, advanced healthcare facilities, and affordable cost of living. To enter into the medical system of Canada, there are 3 exams conducted by the Medical Council of Canada including the MCCEE (Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam), MCCQE (Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination) Part 1, and  Part 2.

International medical students in their final clinical year must take the MCCEE for gaining eligibility to the MCC Qualifying Examinations. The MCCEE is a typical appraisal of the student's basic medical knowledge in the principal medical domains. It is also framed to assess the knowledge & skills required by the medical graduates. The licensing procedure in Canada requires a foreign doctor to undergo a series of exams and get finally certified on the grounds of eligibility, program selection, qualifying for the exam.

Pros & Cons of doing medical PG from Canada:

Pros:

  • For the students looking forward to studying in elite universities with a global perspective, studying in Canada is an appropriate option. It is one of the most developed nations worldwide.

  • A student is eligible for a work permit in Canada, in the spare time after finishing their studies. This allows them to work in the country throughout their program.

  • Canada is considered one of the safest countries in the world, as it experiences very low crime rates than many other countries.

Cons:

  • Getting a medical license in Canada is a very complicated process for Indian doctors and sometimes it may take around 5 to 6 years.

  • The government intervenes or micromanages almost every aspect of life in Canada, from schools to what you consume in restaurants.

16.  INDIA NEET PG now NEXT

Candidates aspiring to do post-graduation in India can opt for MD/ MS degree or a PG Diploma after completing their MBBS. For admissions to the PG courses candidates have to qualify for a common entrance exam called NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). It is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

NEET PG is an eligibility cum ranking examination for various MD/MS & PG Diploma courses in India. However, NEET PG has been now replaced with NEXT (National Exit Test). NEXT is a common exit exam that is a Licentiate Exam, for entrance to medical Post Graduate (PG) course and the screening exam of foreign medical graduates. NEXT will replace NEET-PG by 2022.

Pros & Cons of doing medical PG from India:

Pros:

  • The syllabus is the same for all Indian states. So, students don't have to focus on various high yield topics for different state and central exams.

  • If you don’t get a rank in the NEXT PG, you can attempt again the next year, there's no such limit till unlike the USLME and other exams.

  • Once you are done with your NEXT PG in India with a good rank, you are in. Unlike exams like USMLE, there is no assurance or guarantee for a residency seat.

Cons:

  • In NEXT PG, you get your result and then you get to select the specialty and the college where you want to do your residency as per your rank. In such a case, you may end up taking a field that doesn't captivate you.

  • In case of failure, you can give the exam next year but you can’t do the internship until you pass this exam, like your final year exam.

  • The maximum age for taking the NEXT exam is 25 years for general students. So, you can attempt NEXT till 25 years of age.

17.  Australia AMC (AUSTRALIAN MEDICAL COUNCIL)

Numerous doctors from India have successfully migrated to work in Australia. Australia is one of the best study destinations for students all over the globe. Medical Schools in Australia deservingly enjoy excellent international reputations for the finest quality of their training and research. However, the major hurdle in this process is pursuing the Australian Medical Council (AMC) exam. The prospects for working in Australia as an Indian doctor are a bit challenging due to AMC.

The AMC exam is designed to check the attainment of medical knowledge, clinical skills, and attitudes required by the freshly qualified graduates of Australian medical schools who have to start their clinical internship. The International medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to get the license in Australia require AMC certification. To receive the AMC certification, a foreign graduate must pass the AMC MCQ Exam as well as the AMC Clinical exam.

Pros & Cons of doing medical PG from Australia:

Pros:

  • The Australian Government sets aside a budget of beyond $200 million every year for foreign students coming to Australia. Various scholarship programs are offered to international students from those funds.

  • One of the prime disadvantages of studying in Australia is its expensive lifestyle. Australia is among the costliest countries in the world.

  • To gain admission to an Australian medical school as a foreign student, you have to qualify for the extensive assessment criteria. Also, a considerable IELTS score is required by foreign graduates.

  • It is difficult to manage everything yourself in a developed economy like Australia, including your financial matters.

18.  NEW ZEALAND, NZREX (NEW ZEALAND REGISTRATION EXAM)

If you are planning to study PG medicine in New Zealand, you have made a wise choice! The courses in New Zealand are renowned for their top-notch standards & quality. Graduates from all over the globe migrate to this amazing country for pursuing higher medical studies. Here, for the medical PG course, Indian students will have to present valid proof of English language proficiency. The candidate must pass the IELTS with a score of at least 7.5 in speaking and listening, and at least 7 in writing and reading.

All doctors in New Zealand must be registered to practice medicine. For this, you must qualify the NZREX Clinical (New Zealand Registration Exam). However, New Zealand is a less populated country so, there are fewer job opportunities. It may not be easy always to find a job.

Cons:

  • New Zealand is situated far away from the rest of the world. Only Australia and some small Pacific islands are located nearby. Hence, traveling to and from New Zealand can be expensive

  • There are very few professional fields to go for in New Zealand. So, unless the students are looking in those fields, it is very hard to find a good job.

The MBBS course degree from either Medical Institutes in Nepal will be considered valid only after the student qualifies for the MCI screening test now NEXT Exam. This test is taken by those students who have finished their 5.5 years in MBBS and wish to practice in India. Introduced in the year 2002, MCI Examination is a mandatory test for all the students who have received their MBBS from foreign institutes.

Below listed are 5 significant elements of the MCI examination:

  • It is a compulsory test for any students, who have acquired their MBBS degree from international medical institutes. It permits them to practice medical science in the Indian nation; it is a necessary qualification for their career in India. After the student clears this test, she/he will be placed equal to those who have attained MBBS from Indian universities.

  • MCI Screening test is performed for evaluating the knowledge of fundamental concepts, basic knowledge, practical application, and time management abilities of the candidate. The test might not cover all aspects of the MBBS course and studies. But it will ask questions regarding the key conceptualization of the medical information.

  • Following the successful clearance of the MCI test, the candidate will have to undertake an internship for a year to fit the eligibility specifications. If the student does not pass the exam, they will be left with an MBBS degree and no job scope.

  • There are no limitations for the attempt count the student takes to clear the exam. The student must score a minimum of 50% marks to pass the MCI Screening Test. And the students, who make the exam, can apply to the State Medical Council or Medical Council of India for their permanent enrollment.

  • Clearing the MCI test is a difficult task for the students since it requires a lot of training and practice. Out of all the candidates appearing for the exam, only 19% get through; as per average calculations. The statistics also say that since 2005, there has been a drop in MCI clearance.

Education Loan And Financial Advice For Parents

The students, who are aiming at getting MBBS education and degree from reputed Medical Colleges, should know and be prepared with the financial support they will need during their stay and study. It is slightly difficult for some parents to arrange for the tuition and accommodation fee altogether. Since the students don’t earn themselves, their only option for getting in top universities is Student Loan.

The Eligibility criterion for students to apply for student loans is :

  • The applicant should be an Indian citizen

  • The age of the applicant should be at least 18 years; the parents will have to take a loan on their behalf.

  • The candidate should have a good scholastic backdrop

  • The applicant should get accepted in an accredited international institution, college or university

  • The course should be professional or technical; financers prefer courses that ensure job after completion

Parents should make a detailed budget and funds for the children; estimating the total charge can help you prepare cautiously. The budget should cover all expenses ranging from tuition fees, accommodation charges, health, travel, overhead costs, etc. Also, parents should consult with their children on the monthly allowances, so that there is no risk of going overboard with expenditures.

Disadvantages of Doing MBBS in Nepal

While studying in Nepalese universities might be ‘a dream come true’ moment for many aspirants, it does have a few disadvantages that come with it. Students might find it difficult in adjusting to the new locality and education pattern. Below mentioned are the top few cons of studying MBBS in Nepal:

  • With proper English education, the students can find it hard to understand certain concepts since few faculties may have bad English speech and irregular accent

  • During their internships, the international students are not permitted to touch the patients, therefore it becomes only observe and learn situation for the candidates

  • There is an absence of opportunities for gaining experience in performing surgical operations on real bodies since the system only uses dummies for education purposes

  • All foreign students must learn the regional language for their additional subject

National Exit Test (NEXT) Coaching in Nepal

NEXT or the National Exit Test is the exam that MBBS holders, from international colleges, have to clear for obtaining a License for practicing in India. If the student takes and passes the exam they can successfully give their career as a medical practitioner a proper route. Clearing NEXT can also enable the student for postgraduate courses in India. Its necessity for qualification as a practitioner or PG student has led to an increase in its value. Numerous online and brick & mortar coaching classes provide effective guidance to the aspirants.

Roadmap to Study MD/MS After MBBS in Nepal

With every successful year, hundreds and more of students finished their MBBS course with practical experience by internship. All these students have to appear for NEXT and MCI tests to become qualified practitioners of the nation. It also permits them to go for additional education like postgraduation; although only a few students out of the thousands get eligible for the MD and MS courses.

Other than PG admissions for medical students, there are so many new changes that have affected the admission procedure. The requirement of NEET for postgraduate courses is made compulsory, and all candidates are accepted through entrance tests only. Most students are not able to pass the NEET for postgraduation and miss their opportunity to get a specialization degree.

Indian students who wish to do MBBS from Nepal and practice in the USA have a wide scope of getting a job. After clearing the further set of tests, you will have to clear the USMLE exam to be a licensed medical practitioner in America. There are various steps in this, step one is dedicated to medical basics, concepts, medicine, principles, and functioning. In this 1-day examination, which is split up into 7 blocks of one hour each, the students will be evaluated during this 8-hour session.
