Institute of Medicine (IOM)

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is a renowned medical establishment founded in the year 1972. It lies in Kathmandu which is the capital city of Nepal. The growth of the Institute of Medicine in Kathmandu took place in stages since its inauguration. The primary objective of its establishment was to train health care professionals of all levels to meet the health care requirements of Nepal. Initially, program courses offered at this institution included Proficiency certificate courses in disciplines of General Medicine, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Radiology, Traditional Medicine and Health Laboratory, ANM, and CMA. The aim of the institute promptly evolved into the training of tertiary level health workers by the year 1977 when graduate programs in Community Nursing, Adult Nursing, and Pediatric Nursing were started. The MBBS program at the IOM was launched in the year 1978 when a meager number of only 22 students were accepted. Today the number of seats for MBBS students has increased to 76. The teaching hospital founded with the assistance of JICA in the year 1982 has been presently elevated to a 663 bedded facility that helps in the problem-oriented medical orientation of MBBS students. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) runs under the affiliation of Tribhuvan University in Nepal. The IOM has shown considerable expansion over the years with a total of 12 campuses in and out of Kathmandu.

 

Take a look at the Course Program

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) offered MBBS courses to students for the first time as early as in the year 1978. The course program follows the standard structure with a duration of 5.5 years. The initial 4.5 years of the course conforms to an integrated community-based medical education. This stage is divided into three phases. The first phase constitutes the first and the second year when subjects like Integrated basic medicine, community medicine, Physiology, pathology, anatomy, biochemistry, Microbiology, etc are stressed upon. The second phase of the course takes up the third year of the program when subjects like Applied Epidemiology, Forensic Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Surgery are taught. The rest of the initial 4.5 years of the MBBS program makes up the third and final phase with maximum importance towards subjects like Ophthalmology, ENT, Orthopedic, Dermatology, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, Dentistry, etc. The last 1 year of the course is dedicated to clinical internship training.

Both male and female students are granted hostels within the IOM campus. These student quarters are provided with all modern facilities to make living on campus comfortable for students.

Specialties

The Institute of Medicine at Kathmandu in Nepal has been successful in developing its medical facilities over time. One of the mentionable accomplishments of this institute is the launching of the yearlong Postgraduate Diploma in Anesthesiology with the aid of the University of Calgary in Canada from the year 1984. MCH program in surgery in clinical disciplines like Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology, Urology, Cardiothoracic, and Vascular is offered to students since 2008. The latest development however is the running of 29 different courses from certificate to postgraduate level in Ayurveda, nursing, public health, paramedical, etc from 2013 at the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
