B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS)

The B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences which is abbreviated to BPKIHS was founded in the year of 1993 on the 18th of January. It was later promptly elevated to the status of an autonomous university on the 28th of October, 1998. The university has been named after Mr. Bisheshwar Prasad Koirala who was one of Nepal's great sons of soil working tirelessly towards national integration. The institute situated in the Eastern part of Nepal is famously known for its dedication towards fulfilling social responsibilities by providing state of the art healthcare and health research facilities to the masses. The foundation of the BPKIHS is a prominent Indo-Nepal initiative. Important course programs at the BPKIHS like BDS, MD, MS, MSc started from the year of 1999.

The BPKIHS has several rich program courses encompassing undergraduate, postgraduate, Ph.D., and university certificate programs. The university is known to house Medical, Nursing, Dental, and Public Health colleges. A central Teaching Hospital provided with around 700 beds constitutes one of its many unique features. Undergraduate courses like BDS and MBBS are tenured to 4.5 years along with the mandatory year-long Community Oriented Residential Rotating Internship. The students are required to go through with this internship program in the Central Teaching Hospital facility of the BPKIHS and its Teaching District Hospitals.

Students aspiring for securing the MDS or MD degrees in India can sit for the DCI (Dental Council of India) or MCI (Medical Council of India) screening tests or opt for the courses provided by the university as a part of their postgraduate programs. In other words, the BPKIHS provides MD, MS degrees in various disciplines like pediatrics, orthopedics, anesthesiology, clinical pharmacology, ENT, Internal medicine, and many more which bears the stamp of Nepal Medical Council and even MCI approval. The eligibility of medical graduates looking forward to accomplishing their MD/MS degrees at the BPKIHS depends on whether they had serviced at the district hospitals or primary health centers. B Sc and M Sc nursing programs have also been started at the BPKIHS with great response from students and alumni.

The sprawling ground of BPKIHS hosts hostels for the purpose of student accommodations. Staying on campus is compulsory for students in BPKIHS.
