Many nations already constrain entry at their borders, and only nationals or legal residents are allowed to enter unless there are significant reasons for doing so. How this will affect international students in the fall of 2020 is still uncertain, but you should follow developments closely so that you can plan. Measures taken against COVID-19 may affect education in such a way as to delay the award of high school diplomas or degrees. This, in effect, can mean that when you qualify for a program of research, you theoretically may not fulfill all the criteria. It is plausible that universities will adjust this type of situation because it will impact a large number of first-year students. Because the pandemic affects not only learning but also the management and enrolment of candidates, it is plausible for academic institutions to implement adjustments to their enrollment processes and to postpone application deadlines or semester start dates. Please check your institution(s)'s official website daily for any updates. Russia has introduced locking steps to restrict the transmission of infection. No date has been announced concerning the application deadlines for the autumn semester of universities in Russia. The deadline is usually not before July.

Nowadays, overseas education has a soaring demand for students who aspire to get a quality education. India has one of those countries from where thousands of students opt for overseas study for higher education every year. This is because many times the leading universities in India can’t provide the standard of education and framework which can easily be provided by universities in foreign countries. Nevertheless, when any student thinks of higher education from a foreign country, then he/she must be careful and prepare well for that step by step.

In the past few years, the need for education consultants is significantly felt by the students with the ever-increasing number of courses and subjects available in various streams. A student can approach an education overseas consultant to gain assistance and guidance at every step of foreign studies. The main objective of the educational consultants is to provide critical information specifically about the country where you want to study. Several overseas education consultants offer counseling about getting admission in colleges, fee structure, estimation of expenditure, VISA processing, and many more. Moreover, oftentimes students are muddled regarding which course to select to have a fulfilling career, such consultants assist you as a career counselor also.

Consultant's fees vary from city to city. A rough range can be from 10,000 to 55,000. Also, they have various package systems as per which they charge their clients. Many consultants are there who just aim to extract money from the students. You must beware of such consultants. You may end up paying for more amount than the consultant promised you, as they may put additional monetary efforts to land you right smoothly. The other charges like VISA processing, etc., may cost a bit more to be executed soon. So, if they can assure you get into a top-tier university or help you secure financial aid and scholarships, the additional amount paid is worthwhile.

The admission process for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs for the present academic year are initiated. The classes are scheduled to begin in September or October month. Officials from various universities agreed upon the condition that online classes would continue until the travel restrictions are revoked. Earlier, the media reports stated that the Medical Council of India (MCI) disallowed online classes for teaching the MBBS course program.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), the body regulating medical education has cleared that online theory classes are valid for MBBS students. The semester will start around six weeks late and according to it, the curriculum would also be shifted. Universities will use online meeting platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Blackboard, and Skype for conducting online classes.

10. Is there any scholarship for doing MBBS from Russia?

Yes, you can get a scholarship for pursuing MBBS in Russia.

The Russian government offer scholarships to deserving international students based on their academic excellence. Near around 15,000 scholarships that are known as 'state-funded spots' are offered to international candidates including Indian candidates, annually. Under this scholarship students are offered with maintenance allowance, tuition fee waiver for the selected program, accommodation, if available. Many educational institutions offering medical courses provide scholarships for international students. Alongside grants by the government, students can also apply for non-governmental scholarships and university-based scholarships in Russia that are available to foreign students. Some major scholarships available in Russia are:

1) The Government of Russian Federation Scholarships: This is a state-level scholarship that is available for students to study in Russia. The foreign students are provided with a scholarship that will cover their tuition fees, maintenance allowance, and accommodation costs along with it (about 1300 to 1500 Russian rubles).

2) Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships: Foreign students opting to study a foreign language like Russian can get this scholarship. Firstly, the candidate is required to do a preparatory/language course in any of the Russian universities and then take the entrance exam of the university in which you wish to get admission for the MBBS program.

However, the entrance exam would be in the Russian language. So, you have to study MBBS in the Russian medium for this. If you score well in this entrance exam of the university, then you can get a scholarship on a merit basis.

3) Russian Medical Colleges offer educational grants for a foreign student to pursue medical courses. Students with excellent performance in their academics can apply for scholarships which will cover the cost of studying the course.

As many students are not aware of such opportunities, they are unable to gain the advantage of the scholarship programs. So, detailed research is required by the students to avail utmost benefits.

11. Is CADAVERIC ANATOMY/Dissection allowed in Russia for MBBS Students?

There's a very long history of Dissection, that stems back to the foremost attempts to understand the inner structure of the human body. Even though today, the advanced technologies and innovations are fused with the educational process still dissection persists as an efficacious method of teaching anatomy. The practical classes with cadavers provide an opportunity for the students to enhance their academic performance and successfully learn human anatomy. In today's medical schools, scientific advancement, cultural changes, and new trends in medical education have reformed the role of dissection in teaching anatomy in today's medical schools. Dissection is considered important from different points of view like educational, bioethical, and human values.

All entering medical students have to take Surgery & Anatomy in this they dissect a human cadaver. Today, the most frequent sources of cadavers are body donation programs and the unclaimed bodies, i.e., the bodies of individuals who die and do not have any relatives or friends to claim them for burial or without the means to afford a burial. In some countries that face a shortage of available bodies, anatomists import cadavers from other countries to provide hands-on experience.

Russia has vast experience in clinical anatomy education. In Russia, Kagan (2002) reported that dissection, prosection, and other anatomical materials were used in the teaching of macroscopic human gross anatomy. Such training is provided by the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographical Anatomy. Dissections or Cadaveric Anatomy is compulsory during the undergraduate period for medical students as well as and in the postgraduate period for residents, physicians, interns, and surgeons of different specialties. The teaching of clinical anatomy in the undergraduate medical course occurs in integration with the study of operative surgery and follows the study of gross anatomy in the Department of Human Anatomy.

In Russian colleges, original cadavers are provided in the anatomy class during the training period. In the first year of study, students are extensively immersed in the special field. Further, in the training process, postgraduate students are taught a wide range of educational domains. Also, students undertake educational and on-the-job internships where they learn how to work with the anatomical specimen and gain expertise in dissection skills. Students who completed the program, prepare a scientific report on the major outcomes of their work and would have to qualify for a state exam which is a part of the state final certification via which they become duly qualified.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA- USMLE (UNITED STATES MEDICAL LICENSING EXAMINATION)

Pursuing a medical PG abroad, especially in the USA, is a dream of many medical aspirants. Not only is it exciting, but the aspirants also look forward to learning from the best through several clinical challenges. To have the most skillful staff in its healthcare system, the USA has designed a very thoughtful and clinically oriented medical students' strategy.

For future doctors, there are opportunities for pursuing this dream. While the numbers by AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) talk about the increasing number of older people surpassing the youngsters, the US's medical schools do not keep up with the pace.

How should one apply for the medical PG degree in the USA?

ECFMG (The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate) closely monitors the system. ECFMG conducts a highly competitive USMLE (The United States Medical Licencing Examination) exam online.

This exam helps assess the physician's ability to apply knowledge, ideas, and principles. The exam is in three steps -Step 1 (taken at the end of the second year of medical school), Step 2 (taken in the fourth year of studying medicine), and Step 3 (taken after the first year of residency).

Now, let's discuss the advantages and the disadvantage of doing medical PG from the USA.

Pros:

  • The thoughtfully designed system-

The whole system is very organized. Even the entrance exam focuses on understanding the students' practical knowledge. The medical education system in the USA is well-known for raising the bar in terms of quality education. It produces some of the finest health experts to serve the world. The curriculum itself guarantees the finest quality of education.

  • You get a chance of worldwide recognition-

As the USA's medical education system is so good, a degree from America is recognized worldwide. You can apply for any country once you qualify for the licensing examination requirements and can practice medicine.

  • You can get vast opportunities for research-

Almost all the hospitals and universities in America have research opportunities available. This way, you can stay updated with the healthcare industry's changes and contribute your knowledge to get better.

As the entrance exam consists of three steps, it takes time. The admission process is rigorous with no certainty. The entrance exam, counseling process, and then a long waiting list make the process very tiring.

  • Staying away from family-

No matter how exciting the new life might be, it is going to tough. A new country, away from family and friends, would make you feel like an alien. Though you may feel like an outcast initially, you would soon get to understand the place, and it would keep getting better.

Now that you have an overview of why you should or shouldn't apply for a medical PG from the USA give your best shot.

WHY PURSUE A MEDICAL PG IN INDIA?

The medical education system in India is one of the largest and growing fields of study in the world. Over 60,000 graduates annually earn the license to practice medicine in India, which still puts the doctor-patient ratio of the country to test. The journey from a student to a practitioner in India involves a long process of evaluation and training. The Indian medical education requires a rigorous study of a 5 1/2 year-long undergraduate course (MBBS) to allow one to practice medicine.

NEET PG now NEXT Exam

The NEET PG stands for 'National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Post Graduate).' This is a national-level exam that can be attempted by the MBBS degree holders. According to the NMC Bill 2019, NEXT or National Exit Test is supposed to be a general entrance exam conducted to help exemplary medical scholars to study medicine in their particular departments or even track higher learning. As part of implying an entrance exam, NEXT will also be the standard gateway to achieve a permit to practice medicine all over India.

Failing this Exam would mean you are not a qualified MBBs doctor and hence cannot practice. By NEXT, the government intends to create a more able and skillful lot of MBBS alumni in India and improve the abilities regarding problem-solving in the final MBBS seniors.

If you fail this exam, you will have to retake the test next year. The NEXT exam would be an MCQ computer-based test, which would consist of two parts- NEXT 1 is to be given within 15 days of completing the fourth year and NEXT2 after completing your internship.

  • The government colleges' infrastructure is not updated, the laboratories, the pieces of equipment are often missing or broken.
