European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)

1. Credit Allocation: ECTS credits are allocated to all learning activities required to complete a study program, including courses, seminars, self-study, internships, and laboratory work. Each credit reflects the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work necessary to complete a full year of academic study at the institution.

2. Credit Points: One academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS credits that are usually equivalent to 1500–1800 hours of total workload, irrespective of standard or qualification type. Each ECTS credit represents around 25 to 30 working hours.

3. Bachelor's and Master's Degrees: A Bachelor's degree typically encompasses 180 ECTS credits (3 years full-time), and a Master's degree typically requires 120 additional ECTS credits (2 years full-time) after the bachelor's degree, though this can vary with the program.

Accumulating and Transferring Credits

• Accumulating Credits: Students accumulate credits by completing courses and passing the associated exams or assessments. The credits count towards the completion of the degree program.

• Transferring Credits: If students move from one university to another or participate in exchange programs like Erasmus, credits earned from one institution are recognized and transferred to the other institution, thanks to the ECTS system.

• Exams and Assessments: To earn credits, students must pass exams or other assessments for each course. Exams in Italy can be oral, written, or practical, depending on the subject.

• Grading Scale: Italy typically uses a grading scale from 18/30 to 30/30 for passing an exam, with 30/30 being the highest score and 18/30 the minimum passing grade. A "cum laude" may be added to the highest score as a distinction.

Applying Credits Towards Graduation

• To graduate, students must have passed all required courses and exams, accumulating the necessary number of ECTS credits. Additionally, they usually need to complete a final project or thesis, especially for the completion of bachelor's and master's degrees.
