Founding: UINSA was originally established as State Islamic Institute (Institut Agama Islam Negeri - IAIN) in 1965. It was named after Sunan Ampel, one of the Wali Songo (the nine saints of Islam) who were responsible for spreading Islam in Java.
Transformation to UIN: In 2013, IAIN Sunan Ampel was officially upgraded to a full university and became UIN Sunan Ampel, marking its transition to a broader educational institution, incorporating both Islamic and secular academic disciplines.
