About University of Dhaka

The University of Dhaka also called the Dhaka University (DU) is the foremost public University in Bangladesh. Nawab Bahadur Sir Khwaja Salimullah played a leading role in founding the University in Dhaka. He donated 600 acres of land from his estate for the University. In July 1921, the University of Dhaka was inaugurated for students with Sir P. J. Hartog as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University in the British Raj. The University has made crucial contributions to the modern history of the nation. After the Partition of India-Pakistan, it became the hub of democratic movements in Pakistan. Its students and teachers played a significant role in the rise of Bengali nationalism and the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

The DU Campus Center serves as a uniting force in the campus life of all members of the University - students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The services and programs of DU act as a stimulant for social, cultural, and intellectual growth. Today, the University of Dhaka is the largest public research university in Bangladesh, with a student base of over 37,000. The AsiaWeek identifies DU among the top 100 universities in Asia.

Noticeably, the University has an E-Library which is the largest of its kind in entire Asia. This advanced-level E-Library is connected with 35 internationally renowned libraries and publication houses in the world.

University and Accommodation of University of Dhaka

The University Library includes three buildings: The administrative building, the main library building, and the science library building. It holds a collection of more than 6,15,000 volumes of periodicals, over 30,000 manuscripts in other languages, and a large number of microfilms, microfiche, and CDs. It has a subscription to over 300 foreign journals. Besides, the University of Dhaka ground is the official stadium of the University of Dhaka. It hosts many inter-collegiate sports tournaments at inter-city and national levels. Coming over accommodation, there are 23 residence halls at the campus for the students and dormitories for the teachers as well as for the officials of the university. Also, there is a Medical Center of the University of Dhaka, near the Science Annex Building, which offers free medical service and free pathological examinations to the students.

 

Student life at the University of Dhaka

The University of Dhaka organizes several sports and other extra-curricular activities. The office of the director of physical education provides three types of programs: Compulsory Physical Education, Certificate courses in coaching major games and sports, and, Intramural and extramural programs. Besides, Dhaka University Central Students' Union is the official students' union of the University. It is commonly known in Bangladesh as DUCSU. It operates to represent Dhaka University students in the University's decision-making, to represent the opinion of students in the national higher education policy debate, and to provide various direct services to the student body. Considering the refreshment needs of the students, there are cafeterias on campus, some of which hold historical and architectural interest.
